Nuclear Industry Department

The Nuclear Industry Department was established within the Association to ensure active participation of the Association members and representatives of other Management System Certification Bodies interested in solving the problems of development, improvement and application of standards for management systems in the nuclear industry, including the formation of requirements for conformity assessment schemes and process, and increasing the authority of certificates of conformity.

The Nuclear Industry Department includes representatives of Certification Bodies accredited/approved to certify management systems of organisations operating in this industry according to a number of relevant standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 19443, NQA-1, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001.

Main areas of activity of the
Nuclear Industry Department

1. The nuclear industry is characterised by a very high level of responsibility for the safe and reliable operation of equipment in operation, especially nuclear and radiation hazardous equipment.

In this regard, the Department intends to actively participate in the analysis of the national and international legislative field and existing regulatory documents in the field of the use of atomic energy to prepare proposals for their improvement on the basis of advanced scientific and technical solutions with their subsequent consideration in the development and improvement of standards defining management models for organisations in this industry.

2. Ensuring safety is a key priority for the nuclear industry.

Therefore, the Department intends to actively participate in the development of recommendations on nuclear and radiation risk management, risk assessment and minimisation methods based on ISO 31000 and ISO 22301 approaches, taking into account IAEA requirements for radiation protection and nuclear materials management.

3. The specific features of the nuclear industry determine the need to take them into account when introducing and subsequently applying international standards for management systems and conducting audits of compliance with them.

In this regard, the Department sees its task in establishing an exchange of experience with foreign colleagues of countries that have nuclear industries and are actively developing nuclear power, including organising and conducting international inspections and audits for Russian/Eurasian enterprises of this industry.

4. Nuclear power claims to be low carbon and in fact is low carbon, but requires strict control and minimisation of environmental impact.

The Department sees as one of its tasks to participate in the development of standards for ESG assessment, including energy efficiency (ISO 50001) and green certification, with a particular focus on life cycle assessment of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities.

5. The level of competence of personnel of nuclear industry enterprises directly affects their nuclear and radiation safety.

In this regard, the Department intends to take an active part in the development of programmes for the provision and upgrading of qualifications and the establishment of a system to ensure independent adequate assessment of the competence of such personnel.

6. The reliability and safety of the nuclear industry is highly dependent on the quality of the equipment and materials supplied.

Therefore, the Department intends to participate with representatives of other interested associations in the development of standards for supplier audits similar to NQA-1 or ASME NCA.

7. Our country’s scientific and technical achievements in the field of nuclear energy use are recognised worldwide and are worthy of international dissemination and application.

The Department sees one of its tasks as participation in the promotion of relevant products of the industry’s enterprises abroad, including by harmonising approaches and requirements of foreign partners to such supplier enterprises, as well as supporting the activities of these enterprises in the application and certification of modern management systems.
